THE BEST MONEY SAVING GROCERY TIP FOR BUSY, FRUGAL MOMS!

melaniedj • Jan 05, 2019

If you’re someone who loves to save TONS of money but have so LITTLE time, you’ve come to the right place my friend!

I am frugal by nature, but I had to really get creative about my frugal ways after having my first child. All you moms out there know what I mean. I don’t have time to sit around for hours searching Pinterest for frugal meal recipes and then write down all the ingredients I need.

I hardly have time to wash my hair, folks.

So I love to save money but I don’t have extra time. In fact, my plate it completely full.

So what did I do?

I invested in a meal planning service , and yes, it actually SAVED me money.

When I think meal planning service, I think expensive, extravagant, and not necessary. In my mind, meal planning services are for moms who have a bottomless bank account and are way healthier than I care to be.

Boy was I wrong, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

If you’re busting your little hiney trying to keep the kids not looking homeless, working (or staying home), spending quality time with your spouse and kids, AND trying to get a dinner on the table that isn’t mac & cheese… I feel you. I see you. Let me help you.

THE BEST MONEY SAVING GROCERY TIP

$5 MEAL PLAN

I’m a belieber. Bad joke. But seriously. This meal planning service is legit.

I am sane because of this meal planning service.

It’s probably one of my favorite things, second to not getting spit up on after a feeding (a true miracle).

Here are the reasons that I love this service.

IT IS AFFORDABLE.

Any other meal planning service that I’ve looked into in the past has been extremely spendy, and even though we can afford it, my frugal heart could not bear it.

Just as the name infers, this meal planning service cost $5 per month. Yes, you read that right.

In my opinion (and experience) the return on investment here is extremely high.

Five freaking dollars in exchange for the hours I spend meal planning otherwise is without a doubt worth it to me. Like I said earlier, my time is priceless.

At minimum, this meal planning service saves me an hour a week.

That’s 4-5 hours per week. FOR FIVE DOLLARS.

Worth it. No question about it.

GROCERIES IS OUR BIGGEST BUDGET KILLER.

Food has always been a category that we easily go over budget on.

My husband likes to be fed, and when there is not food to eat, he will go get some elsewhere… like the mexican restaurant down the street.

Eating out multiple times a week adds up reallllllllllll fast.

Ever since we started using this meal planning service, we have been able to stick to our grocery budget almost every single month!

Gone are the days of getting home from work, deciding what I’m going to make for dinner after wasting fifteen minutes on Pinterest, only to scour the cupboards and find I don’t have half the ingredients and thus make an unplanned trip to the grocery store.

This was once a typical day in my life. NO LONGER FRIENDS.

I have moved on to bigger and better things!

USER-FRIENDLY.

$5 Meal Plan is foolproof.

Every Friday, you will get an email with your meal plan for the week. If you don’t like one (or many) of the meals for that week, as I mention later, you can build your own meal plan instead!

The website is extremely user-friendly, which is something this non-techy millennial is always looking for.

It is literally almost impossible to be displeased.

THEY GO THE EXTRA MILE.

Not only do you get your weekly meal plans sent directly to your inbox every Friday, they also have additional bonus content available on their website for those who subscribe to the meal planning service.

STORE-SPECIFIC MEAL PLANNING GUIDES

One bonus item available to subscribers is both Costco and Sams Club grocery meal planning guides. These come in super handy if you have a large family to feed and shop at either stores often.

PRINTABLE COUPONS

I am a couponer, and I love that this service lists all available printable coupons on their website. This makes is super easy to snag the ones that are available for your meal plan!

NUTRITIONAL INFO

Also available to you is a nutritional guide that gives you the nutritional detail for all the recipes! If you’re a calorie counter (not sure why you’d want to do this), or you want to  know what is in your food, they have a super simple way to find out!

INSTANT ACCESS TO A RECIPE BANK

Once you sign up , you are not limited to the meals they send you for the week.

You can log onto your user dashboard and you have instant access to hundreds of recipes.

My favorite part of this is that you can filter and search for a recipe based on ingredient, meal of the day, type of meal (side dish, entree, etc).

Here is a snapshot of how you can filter (once you hover over one of the four options below, you will get another menu with advanced sorting/filtering options):

I love that you are not limited to the meals they send you for the week! This is awesome if you have picky eaters.

Speaking of picky eaters…

YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN MEAL PLAN

Another great tool is the build your own meal plan option!

You can log onto your dashboard, use the search tools pictured above, and start creating your own customized meal plan.

See the picture example below. I selected three meals from the “dinner” category, and dragged them to the right sidebar on my screen (pictured). Once I’m finished selecting all the meals I want, all I have to do is click “review and print” and BOOM!

I have a customized meal plan that has all the recipes and instructions AND a shopping list sorted by ingredient type.

Best thing since sliced bread.

The build your own meal plan is a great bonus feature that many other meal planning services don’t offer! Most of the time with other services, if you don’t like the meals for the week you have limited options for switching them out.

With this meal planning service, you can literally log on anytime and create a meal plan.

Magic.
