How to Have Fun While Paying Off Debt!

melaniedj • Aug 31, 2019

A huge misconception is that you can't have fun while paying off debt.

What I'm not going to tell you is that getting out of debt really isn't that hard and you don't have to make any sacrifices.

The gospel truth is that if you want to get out of debt, you're going to have to work for it. Hard.

That being said, it doesn't mean you have to eat top ramen 3x a day and go to bed at 7pm so you're not tempted to spend any money.

While we were paying off debt , we still wanted to be able to enjoy life, and I truly believe that if you learn to enjoy life at EVERY stage, you'll be a lot happier in the long run.

Even while paying off debt, I believe it is absolutely essential that you have a category for fun/entertainment.

It shouldn't be a large amount, but you should have some. Otherwise you'll deprive yourself and be so tempted to indulge that you'll blow the budget.

GET A LIBRARY CARD

Ok, I feel super nerdy, but I'm freaking obsessed with the library.

In all honesty, I get a warm, fuzzy feeling when we pull into the parking lot and I know i'm about to frolic the aisles of books.

You get the picture here. The library is awesome because you can check out A LOT of books at a time and don't have to pay a dime!

BECOME A FOODIE

Foodie is a valid skill for a resume... who's with me?

In all seriousness, get creative with your meals!

Don't do the same thing all the time. Spend some time trying new recipes and experimenting in the kitchen!

Here's one of my favorite cookbooks that has easy and interesting recipes!

I've definitely gone way out of my comfort zone in the kitchen in the last year, because... why not?

I'm proud to say there's only been a handful of times that my husband has given a meal a rating lower than 5.

For someone who at one time HATED cooking, that's a win.

HOST A GAME NIGHT

Instead of going out to the bars and paying $12 for a couple drops of alcohol and same ice cubes , stay home and have a game night with homemade drinks!

Play cards and have friends over after you put the kids to bed!

When we first got married, going out with friends to bars sucked up a lot of money. It was nothing to drop $500 in one weekend eating out and going out at night.

Once you start telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went, you'll be amazed at how it suddenly feels like you got a raise!

OPT OUTSIDE

Whether it be bike riding, hiking, fishing, or whatever else, have an outdoor adventure that requires minimal cost!

We love to go for walks with our little guy!

Explore your own area or take a little drive for the day and find out what your area has to offer!

VOLUNTEER

A great way to spend your free time is volunteering. No cost and you get to help others!

Ask around at your church, community center, senior center, local shelters/soup kitchens, etc.

There is always somewhere to help, you just have to be willing to do it!

HAVE A ROMANTIC DINNER IN

This has been our thing as of late... not because we're paying off debt but because well... a one year old.

We'd love to have a babysitter every week, but it's hard to come by! So instead, we've opted for date night in, and saved some serious cash for doing so!

Throw the extra $50 at your debt (or more) instead of going out to eat.

When we were paying off debt, we rarely ate out.

Groceries/dining out were categories we seriously slimmed down once we got on a budget.

ORGANIZE YOUR HOME

Get some tips from Marie Kondo and get your house in order. Less is more.

Organizing is a big job! I'm in the process of organizing our entire house room by room, and it's a full time task! And I'm not even paid for it!

It'd probably be a lot easier if I didn't have a child following me around undo-ing all the organizing I just did... but hey. I do the best I can. A for effort!

HAVE BONFIRES

A bonfire is a great idea for the whole family to have fun for free or extremely cheap.

We got a cheap fire pit from Amazon for our back patio and we love sitting outside by the fire!

Frugal family fun at it's finest. All you need is some hotdogs and marshmallows and you're all set.

SELL STUFF

Start digging around your home for things to sell and earn some extra cash to put towards your debt!

Sell old clothes, furniture, toys... your kids!

I kid, I kid. No pun intended.

You can post items for sale on Craigslist, local Facebook swap groups, selling apps like Mercari and Wish, etc.

START A BLOG

Blogging about your debt payoff journey is not only a great way to stay motivated and inspire others, but also will allow you to earn some extra cash!

The best part is starting a blog has an extremely low start up cost and takes less than fifteen minutes to set up.

Through my link , you can get website hosting and Wordpress for $3.95/month as long as you buy at least 36 months of hosting!

That's the cost of one latte a month.

I think that everyone who is on a financial journey should consider blogging! I'm so glad I decided to stop caring what everyone else would think and take the plunge myself.

The best part is you can inspire others to get out of debt and pursue financial peace. You can give them hope!

I have a quick and easy step by step tutorial with pictures on how to set up your blog and start sharing your knowledge with others.
