No, You CAN'T Afford It & Other Things They Don't Teach You in School

melaniedj • May 13, 2018

People HATE saying "I can't afford it."

But the truth is if you can't pay cash for something, you can't afford it and you don't deserve it.

Queue the eye rolls.

This is a tough pill for some people to swallow.

ONLY CASH, no credit?!

Yes, even for a car. Even for a vacation or honeymoon. You name it.

I understand that this radical view of money is not widely acknowledged or accepted, partly because we are taught that we can afford just about anything.

Culturally, we have come to a place where objective affordability is irrelevant.

Want a new car but don't have the cash? Get a loan. Going to the mall but don't have the cash for new clothes? Open a credit card. Feeling like you need a break and want to go on Hawaiian vacation but don't have the cash? Put it on the credit card.

Heaven forbid you are honest with yourself and tell yourself no, I can't afford it right now.

Most Americans take home an income well above the poverty line, yet statistics show that over half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and over 73% of Americans have less than $1,000 in their savings account!

This begs the question, what is our problem? If we make more than we ever have, why can't we save $1,000?

I'll tell you why. Because the borrower is slave to the lender (Proverbs 22:7).

The habit of borrowing money will eventually make you broke. It is hard to build any sort of wealth when your income is tied up and committed to all different kinds of payments every month!

The Power of "I Can't Afford it"

This is the stuff they don't teach you in school, but it is literally some of the most sound and sane financial advice you will ever hear.

You can afford something when you can pay for it in full with cash AFTER all your bills are paid, your tithing and investing is taken care of, and you have a well-funded emergency fund that is not touched.

Saying "no, we can't afford it right now" is something Joe and I learned early in our marriage that allowed us to pay off my student loan debt in under two years ($20k of that was in 12 months, click here to read about it).

There is absolutely no shame in those words, because we knew that if we sacrificed NOW, we would reap the benefits LATER.

Learning to tell yourself (and others) no is an important tool in your wealth building journey.

Suddenly you will notice that YOU HAVE MORE MONEY!

Just Because You Can Afford the Monthly Payment Does NOT Mean You Can Afford the Item

*Palm to face*

Don't try to weasel your way out of the truth and say "well, I can afford the monthly payment so I can afford __________. "

The problem here is that you are gauging your ability to afford something based on the monthly payment , which is actually the LEAST affordable option due to the interest you'll pay on the purchase.

So if you can't afford the lowest possible price (the cash price), then why would you spread the payment over an amount of years and pay the highest possible price?

Yet everyday people buy cars, vacations, motor homes, boats, and educations they can't afford.

Don't let your idea of affordability come from the most expensive option- the monthly payment.

You Need A Plan

If you want to win with money, you have to tell it where to go. Even if you aren't feeling the pain of trying to make ends meet right now, if you are honest with yourself, are your priorities being reflected in how your money is spent? Many people don't take the time to plan their spending based on their priorities. As a result, they wind up frustrated because there is never enough to actually do what they want to do!

A budget sounds restricting- like a restraint that will make you miserable. However, budgeting actually gives you freedom to spend your money without guilt.

Get my free google sheets paycheck budget and create your monthly budget that reflects your priorities.

Without a budget, you are subject to your money, it tells you what to do instead of the other way around!

The All Cash Diet

When you start to pay cash, your thinking will change, EVERYTHING will change.

Suddenly you will realize that your camera only has to shoot your kids basketball game and not the cover of People magazine, and therefore you do not in fact need a $1,000 camera.

I've said this many times, but when you pay cash you spend less because you actually FEEL the pain of the cash leaving your hand. This will cause you to consider the opportunity cost of purchasing an item.

In other words, this causes you to think instead of just swipe.

It's a good idea to pay cash for certain expenses. Ask yourself what are things you tend to overspend on? Groceries? Eating out?

Instead of using a debit or credit card, next time try giving yourself a cash limit.

Yes, You Can Live Without Your Plastic Friend

When you really get intense about building wealth and paying off debt, you will have all sorts of people "concerned."

I love it when people just can't fathom that you don't have a credit card.

They'll try and guilt trip you and say things like...

"What if you have an emergency and need money right away? What about when you travel? What if a dog bites your spouses arm off and the doctor won't reattach it unless you pay by credit card?"

WHAT THEN?!

Two words that can solve all these problems.

DEBIT. CARDS.

The key to survival has been unlocked.

Joe and I have traveled quite a bit since we've been married to visit my family in Washington. We have never taken a credit card.

We have had various emergencies and "oops" come up since we've been married. We have never used a credit card.

So if you have these naysayers in your life, be encouraged, we are 'weird' and don't have any credit cards!

I talk about this often, but I can't say it enough. Don't get caught up in keeping up with the Joneses. The Joneses could be broke. Get caught up in saving for the future, and being able to AFFORD retirement. Don't trick yourself into thinking you can afford something when you know that you can't.

PAY CASH.

Seriously, try it and tell me what you think.

If you have an experience anything like mine, you'll have an epiphany.

You'll realize that you actually HAVE money.

You'll realize that you buy a ton of CRAP that you don't need.

I hope this post gave you a different perspective on the danger of the money habits our cultural has dubbed "the norm" , and I hope that you will join me in being weird.
