The Honest Truth About the Holiday Spending Craze

melaniedj • Oct 12, 2019

The truth about holiday spending in short is that most Americans spend more than what they can afford.

In 2017, Americans racked up approximately $1k in Christmas debt, mainly credit card debt.

Many Americans are willing to ring in their new year with Christmas debt that will follow them all year- in the name of Christmas cheer!

Kids in America get more presents than ever before, and parents are forking out more than ever before.

I've witnessed at family celebrations kids crying when they opened their gift because it wasn't what they wanted.

I think this begs the question... is the holiday spending overboard and are the lessons we are teaching our kids good?

If you're like me and want to be as smart as possible about your holiday spending and teach your family valuable lessons, keep reading!

HOW TO BE SMART ABOUT HOLIDAY SPENDING

PUT IT IN THE BUDGET NOW

Christmas DOES come at the SAME TIME every single year !

I budget for Christmas year round. Every single month I have a certain amount I set aside so that I have the money when it comes time to buy presents, and this way I can start my Christmas shopping way early!

In January (or now if you're just starting to save), take the total amount you'd like to spend on Christmas gifts and divide that by the months until Christmas.

For example, if you typically spend around $600 on Christmas gifts and you start budgeting for it in January, you would need to set aside $50 every month to reach your goal by December.

This is the simplest and most effective way to avoid holiday spending stress- put in the budget!

This way you don't have to come up with $600 extra in December and sacrifice more important goals to do so, like saving and investing!

If you've never made a budget before, start here.

A budget gives you permission to spend money without guilt.

Whether you go all out for Christmas or, like me, think Christmas spending is overrated, as long as it's in the budget you don't have to feel guilty!

Guilt comes when you spend money you know you don't have.

Having a plan for your money is the best way to avoid money stress, especially during the holiday seasons!

KEEP YOUR LIST SMALL

Make your list. Check it twice. Cross a few people off. Don't feel bad about it.

Ok that sounded a little harsh, but do you really need to get your niece, post man, and all your kids teachers gifts?

No, you don't! Yes, I know Pam got all her kids teachers an iPhone X and a massage, but c'mon. It's not necessary. In fact, it's a little overboard.

If you really feel like you can't cut anyone from the list, opt for a DIY or homemade gift instead... cookies anyone?

BE STRATEGIC ABOUT GIFTS

I'm going to be honest, my son plays with the boxes and wrapping paper a lot more than any toys he receives as gifts.

In fact, we did not get our son anything for his first Christmas, and he won't be getting him anything this Christmas either *GASP* !

He gets plenty of loot from his grandparents!

At this age, instead of gifts, we make a contribution to his savings account.

Yes, I get lots of bewildered looks and side-eyes from all the fun moms. To be honest we have the money to spoil our child rotten, but we want him to learn from an early age to appreciate gifts, not expect them.

Get creative with gift-giving and be ok with being different!

THE FOUR GIFT RULE

The four gift rule is simple and will ensure a clutter free Christmas.

The four gifts include a want, a need, something to wear, and something to read!

This idea is great because it works for every age.

While as they get older their present budget will probably get larger, you can keep the same concept!

SHOP ALL YEAR

I'm that crazy person whose shopping for Christmas in July and goes to the store on December 26 to get my Christmas decorations.

The benefit of shopping year round is that you can take advantage of the real sales and space out your shopping so you're not left to do all your shopping the week before!

Try to always buy the item you're out to get during the off-season.

For instance, if I'm looking for a winter coat as gift, I buy it in July.

I save lots of money this way by avoiding being forced to buy all my gifts in December during the "Christmas sales" that aren't really sales.

They just mark up the normal prices and then advertise a 50% discount to trick you into buying the item at normal price.

Someone's gotta tell you the truth ;)

DON'T BE AFRAID TO SAY NO

Let's all say it together... N-O! It's OKAY to say no to people when they ask you to attend another Christmas party or be a part of another gift exchange. Really, it's fine.

I realize that it's not going to break the bank to be a part of another $15 gift exchange, but believe me when I say IT. ADDS. UP.

Add the $15 extra gift exchange you agreed to, the $10 gift you got your boyfriends sister, and the $30 you spent on teachers gifts and there's $55!

When we were getting out of debt , we mastered the word no and the phrase it's not in the budget right now.

Saying no back then because we had to and we were laser focused on our goal set us up for success now , when we have the money to spend but have learned that our spending should reflect our priorities.

I realize that in a culture that teaches you to say YES to everything, saying no can be difficult.

That's why you have to work at it, it's a learned habit.

In a crowd that's broke (but doesn't look the part), don't be afraid to say no.

THROW AWAY THE CREDIT CARD

Want to give yourself an awesome gift this year? Cut up your plastic crutch!

No, I'm not kidding, and no, I don't care about all the points you're missing out on.

The truth is, the points/miles/cash back/whatever-the-heck-else gimmick only causes you to spend MORE money than you normally would. Think about it. The $200 purchase suddenly doesn't bite so much because you're getting 3% of it back! It's basic psychology.

Studies have proven OVER and OVER and OVER (yet people still try to convince me otherwise) that you spend more with plastic , and specifically, with credit over debit.

Credit card users tend to focus more on the benefit over the cost of an item.

In one study credit card users were willing to spend 2x as much with a card than with cash!

REMEMBER WHY WE CELEBRATE

The well known Christmas tagline rings true, Jesus is the reason for the season!

So many times we get caught up in the parties, gifts, contests, and treats, that we barely spend 10 minutes remembering the reason we celebrate.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.

That is the reason our family celebrates, all other celebrations come second!
