3 Essential Tools You Need to Monetize Your Blog & Increase Traffic

Today, I want to talk about how to increase traffic and monetize your blog. 

I found myself frustrated with all the differing opinions and advice out there.

I’m sure you’re thinking…. Here goes another blogger just dropping their affiliate links to try and make money off of me.

Trust me, I get it. I thought the same thing every time I would read a post about what the SECRET ingredient to blogging success is.

I have a spoiler alert… there is no secret ingredient.

What I want to share with you is ways that you can increase your likelihood of becoming successful. On my own blog, I do this by investing in the same things that the top bloggers in my niche have invested in. I take their advice, because if I want to be successful, I want to mimic what other successful people do.

Today I’m going to share the three tools/ideas that have been most successful for my blog, in hopes that you will have the same result. Yes, I am an affiliate for these programs, and so my links below are affiliate links.

Now you’re probably thinking… why the heck is she disclosing that? Aren’t you supposed to try and sneakily place your disclosure about your affiliate links so that people don’t see it?

I believe in transparency. There are countless blogging materials and products I’ve tried that I haven’t found to be successful, so I don’t promote them or use my affiliate links for those products. Why? Because I don’t  believe in them.

I place my affiliate links here because my blog is a business! As either a fellow blogger or someone thinking about blogging, that is one strategy I used to start growing my blog! It is a business. I work my buns off on my blog, and it is my dream job, so I treat it like one :) 

These are three strategies that I have been implementing on my blog that so far have been the most successful for me.

#1 TOOL FOR INCREASING YOUR BLOG TRAFFIC

I’m sure you’ve done your blogging research just like the countless hours that I’ve done mine. If so (even if you didn’t I’m going to help you out), you know that Pinterest is the largest source of traffic for most bloggers.

So what sets one apart from the millions of users on Pinterest? How do you actually use Pinterest to make money?

  • Pinning often- it is recommended that you pin at LEAST 30 times a day as a new blogger to gain presence on Pinterest.
  • Re-pinning only high quality pins - the Pinterest algorithm takes into account not only YOUR website content, but the quality of the content that you are re-pinning.
  • Creating spectacular pins that are aesthetically pleasing - Pinterest prefers pins that have a 2:3 ratio. Try sizing your pins to be 735 x 1102, 735 x 1470, or 735 x 2060.

Tailwind has been an absolute game-changer for me.

For those who don’t know what Tailwind is, it basically pins to Pinterest for you while you sleep, while you’re at work, while your cleaning the babies blowout (or is that just me?), while you’re sippin that marg. 

Before I started using Tailwind, I was manually pinning EVERYTHING . Do you know how soul-draining that is? Ok, that might be a little dramatic, but I can honestly say investing in Tailwind is one of the best investments I ever made as a blogger, and here is why:

  1. I have more TIME to focus on writing posts, building my email list, and creating my own product & course (cats out of the bag)!
  2. I have increased my traffic over 600% in just two and a half months.
  3. Tailwind has something called tribes, which is basically a group specific to your niche. Each tribe has a page where all members of that specific tribe can pin their content. The purpose is to help each other GROW.

The number one way I increased my blog traffic is by focusing on Pinterest. Here is a snapshot picture to show you the jump in traffic I saw IMMEDIATELY by using Tailwind.

Build an Email List

Your email list is the gold (second to all the coffee you need as a blogger of course). 

I’m still working on growing my email list, but I have found a few things that work really well to engage your audience.

GROW YOUR TRAFFIC

First and foremost, y ou need to grow your traffic (see #1) in order to build your email list. There is no point in putting all this time into growing your email list if you are not seeing consistent traffic. In order to increase your traffic (and thus build your email list), make sure you are:

  • Using SEO on your blog posts & images.
  • Growing your Pinterest presence.
  • Creating amazing email content that is VALUABLE to your audience (in other words, don't just go on and on about your life and give them weekly updates). Rather, make sure your content is serving THEM :)

Let’s be honest, people want something of value in exchange for such personal contact information.

  • You MUST offer an opt-in freebie in exchange for email addresses.
  • After you create your freebie, promote your freebie heavily on social media.
  • Add opt-in images (that when clicked take the reader to a landing page) to your blog posts.

Creating opt-in freebies is the number one way I have grown my email list.

USE A TOP NOTCH EMAIL SERVICE

Personally, I use ConvertKit. The stats don't lie. Here's a picture of my Convertkit dashboard, showing my subscriber growth from when I switched from Mailchimp:

I started using Convertkit in November 2018, and I went from 350 subscribers to 4,500 subscribers in just one year! This was right when I started getting serious about blogging after having our first child in July 2018!

I used Mailchimp before, and I can't tell you the countless number of hours I spent trying to figure out how to set up Mailchimp to deliver multiple opt-in freebies.

I wasted SO. MUCH. TIME. Once I made the switch to ConvertKit , everything is SO SO easy to set up, my favorite part is how easy it is to create automations and sequences for subscribers!

Additionally, setting up an opt in freebie is a B-R-E-E-Z-E. With Mailchimp, figuring out how to set up my opt in freebie was nothing but a headache.

Here's why I love ConvertKit :

  • You can set up multiple opt-in freebies in minutes 
  • It is SO easy to set up email sequences 
  • You can set up emails to be sent based on user actions 
  • Premade opt-in templates and popup forms that are easy to customize

I was hesitant to switch to ConverKit because of the cost, but sometimes you have to spend money to make money!

I now have MUCH more time on my hands to work on the actual content of my blog and creating my own product.

Hands down one of the best investments I made for my blog.
