What if I told you that in most cases going to college more than likely isn't worth it?
Before you crucify me, hear me out.
why is college pushed as the ticket to a successful life?
"Oh you didn't go to college? That's too bad."
"Your education is worth it every penny."
"Those who go to college make 1,000x more than those who don't."
COMMON MYTHS ABOUT COLLEGE & WHY YOU NEED TO THINK TWICE
Myth #1:
A Degree Will Set You Apart
There are thousands of people with college degrees. Having a degree doesn't make you special.
Truth #1:
Your Aptitude, Skills & Personality Sets You Apart
Young, experienced people who have failed and learned to make something from nothing
is what sets one apart from the rest.
How well do you rise above challenges?
No, your participation in a group project where one person didn't pull their weight is not an indication that you rise above challenges well.
What is a better indication?
Myth #2 :
Institutional Education is the Best Place to Learn
Yes, you need to learn about your field of study in great depth and detail.
Leadership, maturity, passion, drive, integrity, and people skills.
I firmly believe the current education system is building people to be employees, not entrepreneurs.
Truth #2:
Self-Education is the Best Teacher
Do you want to be successful? Most of the time all you need is a google search bar and a library.
Take a course on people skills.
BONUS- It's a hell of a lot cheaper than college.
A FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITY IS FAR FROM YOUR ONLY OPTION (AND PROBABLY FAR FROM THE SMART OPTION).
Myth #3:
A Bachelors Degree is the Only Way to Guarantee a "Good Job"
The truth is our economy is gravitating towards trade jobs.
don't require bachelor's degrees.
Truth #3:
We Live in an Idea & Skill Based Economy
Stop focusing on a getting a degree and focus on learning a skill.
Sadly, most high school kids are lining up for the university while these high-paying trade jobs sit empty.
Myth #4:
College is a Must if I Want to Be Taken Seriously By Employers
This obviously is NOT the case if some of the largest companies in the U.S. are no longer requiring a college degree to apply.
"It found no evidence to conclude that previous success in higher education correlated with future success in subsequent professional qualifications undertaken."
Truth #4:
Passion, Work Ethic & Experience are Valued By Employers
A college degree provides absolutely no indication of success.
willing and eager to learn
Myth #5:
College is Always Worth It
magical ticket to success
push, and push, and push, and push
The issue is at what cost are they going to college?
Truth #5:
College Doesn't Have a Good ROI (For Most)
Of the friends I went to school with, I can honestly count on one hand those who are working at a job that requires a degree.
Does that mean they aren't successful?
Translation: they did not need a college degree to get the job they have.
they spend the rest of their life paying off that degree.
Starting with debt is not the best way to start.
Young people are putting off buying homes and having kids because of their student loan debt.
DISCLAIMER: COLLEGE IS FOR
SOME
PEOPLE.
this is not the case for everyone
If You Do Decide to Go to College...
Obviously I'm not anti-college.
Know What Field You Want to Study
"you don't have to know, that is why you go to school!"
GO OUT AND GET EXPERIENCE SO YOU CAN FIND OUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO.
Only Go to a School You Can AFFORD
Consider Going to a Junior College For the First Two Years
I think this stigma that those who choose to go to tech schools or junior colleges are somehow inferior to those who choose four year universities is absolutely ridiculous.
TO CONCLUDE...
Remember, successful people learn by DOING, not by learning what to do.
"you're missing a great opportunity."
