7 Things You Are Doing That Are Ruining Your Finances

melaniedj • Sep 27, 2019

Are you ruining your finances without even realizing it?

There are many poor money habits many Americans blindly wander into and that ultimately leave them living paycheck to paycheck.

Don't be that person- take control of your finances and follow the principles below to experience financial freedom.

Many people want financial freedom but not many people are willing to travel down the road that will get them there.

The following 7 habits are ruining your finances!

7 HABITS RUINING YOUR FINANCES

1. Comparing Yourself to Others

Scroll through your Facebook or Instagram feed and you'll basically see a competition for who can own the most, accomplish the most, or have the most followers.

A lot of the time, if they are being honest with themselves , the reason people go into debt is to impress other people with money they don't have.

With all due respect, mind your own business.

People who constantly compare themselves to others easily fall into the trap of debt, because debt allows us to live a lie.

If you learn to be content with what you have, right now, and not worry about what other people think if you drive a paid for old beater , you'll make better financial decisions.

2. Making Minimum Payments

Many people have three, four, five different monthly payments they are making, yet scratch their head and wonder where all their money goes every month.

Monthly payments will devour your income.

The problem is, we've been taught that monthly payments are a way of life.

In order to change this habit, you need to look at a new way of defining affordability.

Whether or not you can afford something should not be based on what the monthly payment is, but rather what the total cash price is.

In other words, if you can pay for the entire purchase in cash RIGHT NOW, then you can afford it. If not, you can't!

Minimum payments are ruining your finances.

3. Failure to Track Your Spending

If you don't track your spending, you have no idea where your money is going every month.

You might think you have an idea, but usually your best guess is pretty far off from the truth.

Before we started budgeting faithfully, I thought I knew what was going out every month on groceries, eating out, entertainment, etc.

I was absolutely shocked when I actually started tracking what we were spending every month- it was WAY more than what I thought.

YOU NEED A BUDGET

Does the word budget scare you? It shouldn't! It sounds restricting, which is ironic- because it's actually what will bring you freedom.

To win with money, you need to know what is coming in every month and where every single dollar is going. You need a budget.

The monthly budge templates pictured below are included in my budget bundle and sold separately ! I created these for beginner budgeters who want to finally take control of their money!

Don't be afraid of budgeting. It has single handedly transformed our finances!

4. Lack of Short & Long Term Goals

Though you can wander into financial ruin, you can't wander into financial success.

Achieving financial freedom takes work and will require you to set goals bigger than what you've ever thought.

Set goals for your money (both long and short term) and break those goals down into small steps.

STUDENT LOAN DEBT EXAMPLE

When we decided that we wanted to get intense about our debt and pay off my student loans , we broke our large goal down into smaller goals.

Our overarching goal was "pay off Melanie's student loan debt in under 2 years."

We broke that goal down into a smaller goal- send at least $2k per month to my debt every month.

Then we broke that down even further. How could we send $2k per month when we were living on one income?

Well, we would have to be extremely frugal and cut all unnecessary expenses. So we set goals for our monthly spending, working extra hours, finding additional income, etc.

BREAK IT DOWN!

5. Listening to Everyone Else

Following the crowd will not lead to wealth building.

I don't know if you've heard, but there's a lot of broke people out there acting like they are rich.

If you want to build wealth, don't take advice from your broke best friend- the one with the new car and a mound of debt attached to her ankle.

Be careful who you take advice from. There are well meaning people who will give you bad financial advice like g o to college no matter what, get a loan to buy a reliable car , and credit cards are a great tool.

Once I started learning more about personal finance, I started to realize that there is a small handful of people I should be taking financial advice from.

6. Lack of Discipline

How many times have you told yourself that THIS is the month you finally get your finances in order?

It's kind of like when moms say this is the month we are finally going to get on a schedule/routine!

I get it, you can't have it all together.

Life is full of trade offs and you have to pick and choose what you are going to devote your time to.

You won't have a perfect budget every month. Unexpected expenses will come up. You have kids and the expenses multiply.

When you are disciplined with your money, these things are easier and less stressful to deal with.

Don't let your lack of discipline and motivation when it comes to your finances destroy you and your families financial future.

Make it a priority!

7. Living Above Your Means

While are economy is booming, 78% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. So what gives?

I'd argue that although we are richer than ever as Americans, we have been saturated in a culture that teaches us that we deserve what we want RIGHT NOW , no matter how much money we have in the bank.

Just graduated college? Buy yourself a car as a YAY ME gift to yourself.

Just got married? Better find a house just like mom and dads.

Can't stand to see everyone going on a tropical vacation BUT you? Put it on a credit card and pay later.

For goodness sake, take control of your money. Spend less than you make. Stop worrying about what everyone else has. Stop ruining your finances.

Be content with where you are RIGHT now.

If you can't do that, you'll never find true contentment, no matter how big your paycheck.
